What is a Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty, more commonly called a tummy tuck, is a plastic surgery procedure in which excess amounts of skin and fat are removed from the lower and upper abdomen while weakened or separated abdominal muscles are tightened to flatten the area. The result is a much flatter abdomen with a smoother profile.

Why Choose a Tummy Tuck?

A muffin top is something that most people deal with at some point in their adult lives. For some people, this is remedied with a healthy diet and exercise routine while others deal with it no matter what they do to correct it. When the skin loses its elasticity and appears to sag, abdominoplasty may the answer.

Who is a Good Candidate for Abdominoplasty?

Most candidates for a tummy tuck have experienced significant weight losses or pregnancies that left sagging, stretched skin. And no matter how fit they are, the abdominal skin hangs loosely keeping them from being able to reveal their reshaped contour.

How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

A full abdominoplasty involves a couple of incisions. The first one is a curved incision starting at one hipbone then curving down to the pubic area and up to the opposite hipbone while the second one is made around the navel. Skin and fatty tissues are lifted away from the underlying muscles at the pubic bone and up to the lower part of the chest bone. The navel is left attached to the stalk.

From there, permanent sutures are placed to tighten the abdominal muscles then the skin is placed back over the area and stretched. Any excess skin is removed, and a new opening for the navel is made if necessary. When the edges are closed, drains are placed to remove fluids and blood during the initial healing.

About Mini Tummy Tucks

A mini tummy tuck is an abbreviated version of the full procedure. This procedure is similar but is targeted at the area below the belly button.

How is the Recovery from a Tummy Tuck?

The recovery from a tummy tuck takes a bit more time than other procedures. There is some swelling and bruising at the incision site. Most patients take a week or so to recuperate before returning to any work. Light activities and work may be done for a few weeks until the incision is fully healed.

When Will I See the Results from a Tummy Tuck?

The results from a tummy tuck are immediately visible and get better with time as the healing process progresses. Once swelling and bruising are diminished, the newly shaped profile is very noticeable. There is a scar but it is below the underwear line and diminishes over the months following the procedure.
