Body Lift in Santa Barbara, CA
Following a significant weight loss, there can be a large amount of excess skin left stretched and unable to return to its normal state. Men and women in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and Ventura, CA, as well as the surrounding communities, turn to Sara Yegiyants, MD, FACS, a triple board-certified plastic surgeon, for body lift surgery to showcase their new physique.
What is a Body Lift?
A body lift is an extensive, plastic surgery procedure that removes excess, sagging skin from the body. This type of surgery is typically performed following an extensive and significant weight loss where the skin is permanently stretched and unable to return to its normal, taut shape.
Because the surgery is more extensive than other targeted procedures, body lifts are typically done in two categories: upper and lower body lifts. Patients typically choose one or the other. If they have both, it may be recommended to have them in two stages.
An upper body lift targets the areas around the breasts, arms, neck and upper back. Since the upper body is the most exposed to others, excess skin may cause people to look heavier than they are, making them self-conscious about their appearance.
The lower body, including the abdominal area, hips, thighs and buttocks, typically has the most excess fat and skin, making a lower body lift more popular. Once complete, the full effects of the weight loss are visible.
Why Choose a Body Lift?
When severely overweight people have lost a very substantial amount of weight, they tend to have excess sagging skin that cannot return to normal. When this happens, there is little change in appearance making it difficult for them to look as thin as they truly are. Body lifts afford the opportunity to tighten the skin in the areas where the sagging occurs.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Body Lift?
The best candidates for a body lift are those who have undergone an extensive, arduous and successful weight loss process, and want to be able to benefit from their hard work. While they are physically fit enough to participate in sports and other activities, the excess skin may cause mobility issues and hold them back. Most importantly, candidates must be in good physical and emotional health as a body lift is an undertaking and requires more due diligence than other procedures.

How is a Body Lift Performed?
The first step in a body lift is a consultation with Dr. Yegiyants to discuss the patient’s desired goals as well as evaluate the body and determine the best way to proceed with the surgery. Once the areas are selected, the procedures are done under general anesthesia. Incisions are made to tighten and remove excess skin around selected areas of the body. Once complete, the incisions are sutured close and dressed in bandages. Depending on the areas selected, compression wraps or garments may be applied to minimize swelling and bruising as well as protect and support the areas. Depending on the extent of the surgery, the procedure may require an overnight stay in the hospital.

How is the Recovery from a Body Lift?
The recovery and healing from a body lift takes more time simply because the procedure involves more than one area of the body. Most activities are restricted for a few weeks following the surgery to allow for the incisions and areas to heal.
When Will I See the Results of a Body Lift?
The results are somewhat immediate and continue to improve over time. Once the incisions have healed and the swelling has subsided, the accomplishments are much more noticeable. Over time, the scars greatly diminish and are barely visible. A body lift produces drastic results that are amazing.
How Much Does a Body Lift Cost in Santa Barbara?
The cost of a body lift is different with each patient as it is based on the type of body lift, the extent of the procedure and how many areas are involved. During a consultation, we provide detailed costs to our patients as well as discuss our payment and financing options, including Alphaeon® and CareCredit®. If any part of the surgery is considered medically necessary, we help patients determine if their insurance plans provide any coverage of the cost.
