Earlobe Repair in Santa Barbara, CA
Continued wear of heavy earrings and gauges easily stretches and weakens pierced ear holes, sometimes to the point of a clean tear through the bottom of the lobe. Sara Yegiyants, MD, FACS, a triple board-certified plastic surgeon, performs earlobe repair on torn earlobes, restoring their natural shape and size for residents of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Ventura, and other nearby cities.
What is Earlobe Repair?
Earlobe gauging and wearing heavy earrings damages the earlobes by stretching and even tearing the holes made for pierced ears. Other injuries may come from babies pulling on earrings or getting them caught in clothing as it is pulled over the head. Earlobe repair is a surgical procedure that repairs the holes and restores a more normal appearance.
About Cleft Earlobe Repair
When a tear in the earlobe goes through the entire area, it may leave a clefting, or indentation, in the bottom of the earlobe. This type of earlobe repair involves removing the edges of the cleft to achieve complete closure of the tear.
Why Choose Earlobe Repair?
If an earring stretches a pierced ear hole to the point that they tear through the bottom of the lobe, earlobe repair is typically the only way to correct the injury. Gauging, making overly large holes in the earlobes, is very popular but does a lot of damage to the earlobes. Dr. Yegiyants can correct it with earlobe repair.
Who is a Good Candidate for Earlobe Repair?
The best candidates for earlobe repair are those who have gauges in the earlobes that create permanent holes in the lobes. Additionally, people with torn earlobes from wearing heaving earrings, or having their earrings pulled, may consider earlobe repair to restore the normal appearance.

How is Earlobe Repair Performed?
Earlobe repair is a straightforward procedure performed under local anesthesia. The procedure takes about an hour to perform. Small incisions are made at the end of the earlobe if it is not ripped through and outer layers of skin around the holes are removed. The two sections are sewn together using very fine sutures so that they can heal together.
How is the Recovery from Earlobe Repair?
The healing process for earlobe repair takes about a month for the incisions to fully heal. Sutures may be removed within a week at which point the earlobes should be fused together although not fully healed.

When Will I See the Results of My Earlobe Repair?
Even though the outer incisions heal within a couple of weeks, it takes longer for the tissues to fuse together. Re-piercing may be possible but it is important to wait at least three months to allow for the inner tissues to heal. Depending on the extent of the damage, Dr. Yegiyants can recommend if re-piercing is possible.

Earlobe repair varies with cost based on whether one or both earlobes require repair and the extent of the repair to restore a normal appearance. We review the costs along with payment and financing options during a consultation. We offer financing through Alphaeon® and CareCredit®.
