Your unique facial anatomy may have given you a weak or prominent chin. Regardless of your cosmetic concern, triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sara Yegiyants offers multiple options to bring your chin into balance with your forehead, nose, and neck.
Following chin surgery, taking the best possible care of yourself is essential to ensure a healthy and quick recovery. Expect swelling, bruising, and some discomfort immediately following the procedure. Dr. Yegiyants will prescribe pain medication for you, and you can manage swelling and soreness with ice packs.
Chin implants involve a relatively brief recovery process. You may feel well enough to return to work after a week if you take good care of the area and follow Dr. Yegiyants’ instructions.
What Should You Eat During Recovery?
Nausea is a common side effect of anesthesia medicines. Immediately after you wake up from anesthesia, you should hydrate with clear liquids such as water or tea.
Since chewing can be painful after you have chin surgery, you may want to eat a liquid diet in the earliest phases of healing. Suggested foods include fruit smoothies, bone broth, and nutritional shakes like Ensure. Sticking to a liquid diet can be challenging, but it’s vital to your recovery and your results. Plus, it’s only for a few days.
Once you finish the liquid diet phase of your recovery, the next stage is soft food that doesn’t require much, if any, chewing. If it crunches or makes noise when you eat it, you’re not ready to add it to your diet yet. Foods we recommend include:
- Mashed potatoes
- Scrambled eggs
- Soft fish
- Soup
- Yogurt
- Jell-O
- Applesauce
You should continue eating soft foods for at least two weeks.
Final Stage of Recovery
During the next few weeks, you can reintroduce foods from your usual diet and begin chewing. Cut these items into smaller pieces until your mouth and chin are comfortable with biting large pieces.
Avoid crunchy or hard foods like apples, carrots, popcorn, nuts, and meats for at least three months after surgery.
