Love your breasts again with breast lift surgery. Most women will experience breast sagging during their lifetime, but a breast lift can bring your perky breasts back. During a breast lift, extra skin is removed, the breasts reshaped and lifted to a youthful position on the chest wall. Breast lift surgery can be combined with breast augmentation if you want to increase the size and enhance the shape of your breasts.
Breast Lift Incision Placement
Triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sara Yegiyants in Santa Barbara, California, performs each breast lift transformation with carefully placed incisions. The incision type she’ll choose for your breast lift will depend on the amount of breast sagging you’re experiencing. The more sagging you have, the more extensive the incisions need to be to achieve your ideal breast shape.
Dr. Yegiyants will tell you which incision will work best for your breasts. Common incision types for breast lift surgery include:
- Donut – If your sagging is minimal, Dr. Yegiyants may recommend a donut lift, also known as a Benelli lift, a technique that uses an incision around the areola only. The donut incision leaves minimal scarring because the incision is hidden in the color transition from the breast to the areola.
- Lollipop – A lollipop incision can treat mild to moderate breast sagging. A complete circular incision is placed around the areola, together with a vertical incision straight down from the base of the areola to the crease under the breast, forming a lollipop shape.
- Anchor – Extensive sagging is best treated with an anchor incision with a technique that combines a lollipop incision with a horizontal incision in the breast’s crease. An anchor incision allows for maximum breast reshaping.
All three incision placement options allow Dr. Yegiyants to reshape and lift the breasts.
Scarring is common after a breast lift, but the improvement in breast shape and position typically offsets any scarring that does occur.
How Breast Lift Incisions Heal
Healing takes time after plastic surgery. As you heal, your incisions will go through several stages of recovery. Be patient and give your skin time to heal.
Let’s explore the common stages of breast incision healing so that you know what to expect after a breast lift.
- Inflammatory – New incisions are in the inflammatory stage and are usually dark red and may be tender. Dr. Yegiyants will show you how to care for these new incisions so they can heal properly.
- Proliferative – During the proliferative phase, incisions create new blood vessels and heal, typically occurring 1-3 weeks after surgery. Your incisions will now be a dark pink color as the skin starts to heal. At this phase of healing, you can resume many activities safely because the skin has regenerated and the incisions are no longer open.
- Maturation – The maturation phase of incision healing takes the longest. During this phase, the incisions will begin to lighten and become less visible. The complete process can take up to two years, but most patients notice a significant improvement in the appearance of their incisions within a year of surgery. During this phase, incisions will become thinner, and their color will fade until they are similar in appearance to your natural skin color.
