Recovery doesn’t have to be the most difficult part of getting a rhinoplasty. With a little preparation and some simple tips, you can enjoy your recovery. Think of recovery as a much-needed vacation and an opportunity to refresh and relax.
Full recovery from rhinoplasty with Dr. Yegiyants takes about a year, but don’t worry; you’ll be back to life much sooner. Most patients miss one to two weeks of work after rhinoplasty. You can return to exercise and strenuous activities within six weeks. Most patients are delighted by the appearance of their new nose within four to six weeks of surgery, but your appearance will continue to improve and refine until you’re fully recovered.
1. Elevate
Elevation is one of the best things you can do for your nose after rhinoplasty. Keeping your head elevated (even when sleeping) reduces bruising and swelling. It is also a lot more comfortable.
Before nasal surgery, prepare for your recovery by stocking up on pillows. You may also want to invest in a wedge and/or u-shaped pillow for easier positioning. Some patients choose to sleep in a recliner for the first week or two.
2. Wear Your Contacts
Glasses and rhinoplasty don’t mix. As your nose heals, it is important to avoid putting pressure on the bones and cartilage of the nose. These healing tissues are easily shifted and wearing your glasses can lead to permanent deformation in your rhinoplasty results.
If you need glasses to see, what can you do? Many patients wear contact lenses after nasal surgery. You can also invest in a pair of bridgeless glasses or other creative options.
3. Stay Out of the Sun After Rhinoplasty
After surgery, the skin is more sensitive to the sun. It burns more easily and is prone to developing hyperpigmentation, especially near your incisions. Too much sun after surgery can permanently change your skin and negatively impact your rhinoplasty results.
Limit your time in the sun after rhinoplasty. If you do need to go outdoors for a short period of time, wear sunscreen and a hat. Seek out shady areas to further cut down on sun exposure.
4. Hydrate Early and Often
Are you hydrated? Most of us don’t drink enough water. Studies show that hydrated patients have a better recovery, often reporting less nausea and discomfort during their recovery.
Increase your liquid intake before surgery so that you’re hydrated going into the procedure. After surgery, keep your favorite beverages nearby so it is easy to stay hydrated. Make sure you avoid alcohol and caffeine as these drinks can dehydrate the body and slow healing.
5. Get Moving
Gentle movement speeds healing and reduces the risk of blood clots after surgery. As soon as you’re able, start taking slow walks. Short distances are fine—just get your body on the move.
6. Take Time Off Work
Your body needs time to heal after rhinoplasty. Take time off work, even if you don’t think you’ll need it. Extra rest is one of the most enjoyable parts of recovery.
