Botox® is the most famous name in non-surgical facial aesthetics, but it isn’t your only choice. Dysport® and Xeomin® are similar neuromodulators that resolve dynamic wrinkles and soften expression lines. Now, there’s a groundbreaking anti-aging product called Daxxify that only a handful of Santa Barbara practices offer.
What Is Daxxify?
Daxxify is a peptide-enhanced injectable that treats frown lines. It contains peptide exchange technology to temporarily deliver the botulinum toxin to the nerve cells to improve moderate to severe lines. It works like other neuromodulators, blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contraction and minimizing expression lines.
The FDA has approved Daxxify for smoothing facial wrinkles in adults. Aesthetic clinicians regard it as the first major Botox® competitor to emerge in decades. The difference with this injectable is that it keeps wrinkles away longer than its contemporaries. In clinical trials submitted to the FDA, 80% of Daxxify patients had little to no visible facial wrinkling after four months. About half had little evidence of lines and wrinkles six months after injections.
How Is Daxxify Similar to Botox®?
A purified form of botulinum toxin type A is the primary ingredient in all neuromodulators, including Daxxify. It’s responsible for smoothing fine lines and dynamic wrinkles. The botulinum protein requires stabilization with another ingredient before clinicians can use it safely.
Botulinum toxin type A is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This protein temporarily blocks communication between nerve cells. As a result, they don’t transmit the signal that makes the muscles contract.
Different factors typically cause wrinkles, like loss of skin elasticity and less oil production in the skin. Repeated facial expressions like squinting and frowning can leave traces like crow’s feet and forehead furrows. While botulinum toxin is in effect, the muscles remain relaxed, smoothing the overlying skin. Daxxify and Botox® share this quality. However, the ingredients they use to stabilize botulinum are different.
How Is Daxxify Different From Botox®?
Daxxify differs from Botox® because it takes effect more quickly and lasts longer for most patients. For example, most people will experience a significant decrease in expression movements within two days with Daxxify, shorter than the five to seven days it takes for Botox®. And Daxxify has proven to last longer, with patients claiming benefits lasting six to nine months compared to the three to four months typically achieved with Botox®.
Unlike Botox®, Daxxify doesn’t use animal or human proteins in its formulation. Instead, a peptide stabilizes it and holds it in place. This peptide also helps it bind faster to the nerve receptor, allowing you to enjoy your benefits sooner.
Because Daxxify doesn’t employ these proteins for stability, it’s a “pure” toxin. Eventually, Botox® patients will need more units to create the same desired results due to antibodies that form and make the product less effective. That’s not the case with Daxxify.
That’s not to say Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® are worse or more dangerous – it’s a matter of preference. For example, if you’re vegan or prefer vegan beauty products, you may choose Daxxify.
Daxxify Is Useful for Patients Who’ve Tried Other Neuromodulators
Daxxify benefits last up to twice as long as Botox®. Once you have an established relationship with your aesthetic specialist and are happy with your anti-aging regimen, there may come a time to switch from Botox® to a longer-lasting treatment.
Daxxify Is Safe for All Skin Types
Daxxify’s safety and efficacy are well-established, with more than 20 years of research behind it. In addition, researchers have studied Daxxify in the most significant Phase Three clinical trial ever conducted for frown lines, including more than 2,800 men and women across different age groups and skin types.
Does Daxxify Hurt?
As with any other injectable, you’ll feel the needle prick. However, skilled injectors know how to introduce this product quickly and gently. With Daxxify, some patients report a slight stinging sensation for a few moments during treatment because the formula’s pH is a little more acidic than other neurotoxins. You should note that all neuromodulator injections have side effects and risks, like slight bruising at the injection site, the rare incidence of asymmetry, or infrequent allergic reactions.
Is Daxxify More Expensive?
Per each treatment, yes. Like all aesthetic treatments, prices vary depending on your provider and where you live. On average, Daxxify costs more per unit than other injectable neuromodulators. But you’ll save money over time because it may last twice as long, reducing your need for repeat maintenance treatments.
Is Daxxify Better Than Other Neuromodulators?
If you’ve been getting Botox® and are happy with your results, we suggest you stay the course. But if you’re new to neurotoxin treatments or seeing a new provider, you may not want results that last six to nine months. While some dermal fillers are reversible, you can’t undo neurotoxin outcomes. If you’re unhappy with your Daxxify results for any reason, the only thing to do is wait it out.
Dr. Sara Yegiyants offers Daxxify as an option for patients who aren’t getting the longevity they want or need from Botox® or other neuromodulators. Also, Daxxify is an excellent alternative for people who feel their results are too short-lived and would prefer fewer injections.
How Is Daxxify Different From Dermal Fillers?
Daxxify minimizes moderate to severe frown line appearance around the eyes, forehead, and eyebrows by temporarily relaxing the underlying muscles that cause these wrinkles. Daxxify is a long-lasting botulinum type A treatment made with a novel peptide.
Fillers like Juvéderm® consist of hyaluronic acid to add volume, structure, and fullness to targeted facial areas. They can soften lines around the mouth and nose, help contour cheekbones, and plump your lips. Dermal fillers target volume loss and static wrinkles rather than muscle-related or dynamic wrinkles.
