What Causes Cellulite?
Cellulite occurs when connective tissues pull the skin downward, exposing the fat underneath. The connective tissue ties create a bumpy, puckered appearance on the skin.
What causes cellulite? Although men can have cellulite, being a woman is one of the most significant risk factors for this condition. Hormones and genetics are believed to contribute to the problem too.
Having cellulite doesn’t mean you’re too fat. Most women have cellulite, even women without extra weight to lose. And losing weight may improve some types of cellulite, but not all.
The Many Different Types of Cellulite
Cellulite isn’t one-size-fits-all. Did you know there are different types of cellulite?
Dr. Yegiyants can tell you what type of cellulite you have (and you may have both in different areas) after an examination. She can also help you pinpoint solutions for your trouble spots.
- Hard Cellulite – Hard cellulite is found deep under the skin. This type of cellulite is firmer and more compact than soft cellulite. Some patients find that hard cellulite is tender and uncomfortable. This type of cellulite is commonly found in very athletic and muscular patients.
- Soft Cellulite – Soft cellulite is closer to the surface of the skin than hard cellulite. It is highly visible and creates a bumpy appearance on the skin.
- Edematous Cellulite – Fluid retention can create a cellulite appearance on the skin. This type of cellulite is the rarest and also one of the most difficult to treat. It is commonly found in the legs, especially in patients with lymphatic insufficiency. You may develop this type of cellulite if you have varicose veins or other circulatory problems.
Cellulite also varies in its severity. Some patients have mild cellulite that is difficult to see, while others may struggle with very pronounced and noticeable cellulite.
