What Are Soft Tissue Fillers/Facial Fillers?
Soft tissue fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the in areas of the face and hand that have lost volume over time.
As we age, our face naturally loses subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles then begin to work closer to the skin surface, so smile lines and crow’s feet become more apparent.
The facial skin also stretches a bit, adding to this loss of facial volume. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle.
Dermal fillers can be used to:
- Plump thin lips.
- Enhance shallow contours.
- Soften facial creases and wrinkles.
- Improve the appearance of recessed scars.
- Enhance the appearance of thinned skin of hands.
- Dermal fillers can be very helpful in those with early signs of aging, or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery.
- There are several different types of dermal fillers.
Dermal fillers differ in chemical make-up, longevity, and have varying degrees of softness. Softer fillers are used in the lips, for example, while sturdier fillers might be desired to enhance cheekbones.
Nearly all currently available and FDA-approved soft tissue fillers are temporary in nature. They must be repeatedly injected into the tissues to maintain their effect.
The length of time they remain in the soft tissues varies with the characteristics of the filler itself and the patient’s unique response to the filler.
What Are Calcium Hydroxylapatite Injections?
Calcium hydroxylapatite is the heaviest of facial dermal fillers. An example of calcium hydroxylapatite injections is Radiesse®.
Calcium hydroxylapatite is found naturally in human bones and is a mineral-like compound. It’s often used to fill:
- Moderate-to-severe creases, such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines and frown lines.
- Enhance fullness of the cheeks and other facial contours.
Calcium hydroxylapatite is biosynthetically produced, which means that no animals or animal products are used. This lowers your risk of an allergic reaction and no skin testing is required.
This type of dermal filler is known to produce a very natural result, doesn’t migrate, and side effects are rare.

What Are Hyaluronic Acid Injections?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body. It retains water absorbing more than 1000 times its weight and adds volume to the skin’s surface.
It also binds with collagen and elastin and transports essential nutrients to these fibers. The combination of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid provides structure, elasticity, and volume to the skin and contributes to its overall appearance.
As the skin ages and is exposed to environmental pollutants and ultraviolet rays, the cells lose the ability to produce hyaluronic acid. As a result, the skin begins to lose volume, resulting in the formation of facial wrinkles and folds.
Dermal fillers comprised of hyaluronic acid are used to temporarily replace lost hyaluronic acid and to restore skin volume and a smooth, natural appearance.
Brand names include:
- Captique®
- Esthélis®
- Elevess®
- Hylaform®
- Juvéderm®
- Perlane®
- Prevelle®
- Puragen®
- Restylane®
- Belotero®
Hyaluronic acid is not derived from animal sources.
When this gel is injected, it acts like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging. It also brings water to the surface of the skin to keep it looking fresh and supple.
What Can I Expect After The Soft Tissue Filler Injection?
There is minimal recovery following these injections. Makeup may be worn shortly after the treatment. Very mild redness and swelling may occur for the first few hours after the injection.
Patients undergoing any kind of injection procedures should try to abstain from products that increase bleeding since this will increase their tendency to bruise.

Who Is Not A Candidate For Soft Tissue Fillers?
Active inflammatory skin reactions, such as herpetic blisters, rashes, pimples, cysts or hives, necessitate postponing the injection of fillers into the affected area until the condition has resolved.
Patients with a strong history of herpetic blisters should undergo suppressive treatment with anti-herpetic treatment prior to undergoing filler injections in the lips or adjacent areas.
Patients with connective tissue disorders may have increased susceptibility to hypersensitivity reactions.
Women who are pregnant, attempting to become pregnant or nursing should avoid soft tissue fillers since its safety during these conditions has not been established.
